So, how did this Texas beauty queen studying to become a surgeon end up in jail facing a 40-year prison sentence?

Mistie Layne’s Journey

Mistie spent years hiding behind toxic shame and guilt for killing somebody while in a horrific cocaine addiction. Vulnerability, insecurity and depression from a previous divorce led her into the arms of cocaine when she didn’t respect a critical moment of choice. She immediately fell straight into full blown addiction which spiraled out of control for 10 riveting years. She carried heavy baggage full of crippling guilt, remorse, anger and resentment around this tragic journey.

During Mistie’s life journey she went from wearing a tiara and sash while waving and smiling in parades to sporting black eyes, bruises and being too scared to voice her own opinions in fear of domestic violence.  She became broken, lost and depressed, no longer recognizing herself in the mirror. While sitting in jail awaiting her prison sentence, she battled with survivor’s guilt daily and had days she didn’t know HOW to live without the cocaine or with the guilt from killing someone.

Fortunately, through faith and strength, she discovered writing as a powerful tool and claims it was the therapy that saved her life!  She pulled herself up by finding resilience and endurance in the “silver linings” of her journey instead of focusing on the negativity. She put the work in and found the strength to write her story while sitting in a jail cell.

After her release from prison, she was still burdened with toxic shame and guilt and didn’t have the courage to release the book due to fear of judgement from others.  Eight years later on the exact day of the wreck, her first grandchild was born with severe brain damage after suffering an oxygen deprivation during childbirth. Eliana was born blind, deaf, couldn’t cry or hold her temperature and Mistie blamed herself and thought it was her punishment because the dates couldn’t be a coincidence, right? She then realized her past was robbing her future and decided to fight to live a better life by sharing her story to be of service to help others.  Once she changed her story from blame and anger to forgiveness and accountability, she was able to overcome her worst to live her best.

Today, Mistie works with individuals and teams to build resilience and empowerment as a coach, professional speaker and best-selling author. She hosts transformational writing retreats, her own Dare 2 Share TV show and presents at businesses and personal development events worldwide.
